Looking up Dante Alighieri Street (named after the famed Italian poet), past more Austrian architecture on the eastern edge of Borgo Teresiano. Trieste was a maritime rival to Venice, a Free Port of the Holy Roman Empire, a naval port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and finally annexed into Italy after WWI.
