| Connecting Piazza Oberdan, on the northern edge of the city centre, with the village of Villa Opicina in the hills above, is the Trieste-Opicina tramway, an unusual hybrid incorporating a funicular railway up the steeper mountainous sections of the line. It was first operational in 1902. |
