On the southernmost tip of the island of Manhattan is the Battery, a large public park named for the artillery batteries that were built in the late 17th century to protect the fort and the growing settlement behind them. The surrounding area contains multiple ferry terminals into New York Harbour, and was the city's immigration landing point until 1892 (when it moved to Ellis Island).
