| Standing on the western edge of the Battery is Castle Clinton, a circular standstone fort built between 1808-11. It was originally constructed as a troop barracks, before it was re-purposed as the country's first immigration station in 1855: more than 7.5 million people arrived in the United States here between then and 1890. Today it houses a tourist information centre. |
