The Victorian-era Lews Castle, just west of Stornoway, built between 1844-51 as a country house for Sir James Matheson, who bought the entire island some years previous with his fortune from the Chinese opium trade. The estate was later gifted to Stornoway parish in 1923, and after decades of abandonment it became a museum in 2016.
