| On the western coast of the Isle of Lewis stands the ruins of Dun Carloway broch, a dry-stone tower built in the 1st century AD, with a 15m diameter at its base and walls 3m wide. Even as a ruin, it is remarkably well-preserved: the east-side wall, seen here, still reaches 9m tall. |
