Looking north-west across Sossusvlei from the top of Dune 45, 170m up. Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan penetrating deep into the Namib Desert, surrounded by rust-red sand dunes anywhere up to 300m high. Their red colour indicates a high concentration of iron (and its consequent oxidation) in the sand.
