| Looking north-east across Sossusvlei from the top of Dune 45, 170m up. The name "Sossusvlei" is of mixed origin (sossus is Khoi for "no return", vlei is Afrikaans for "marsh") for "dead-end marsh", owing to the fact that it is an endorheic drainage basin (without outflows) for the ephemeral Tsauchab River. |
