The World Clock in eastern Alexanderplatz is a large turret-style world clock, erected by East Germany and opened at the same time as the Fernsehturm in 1969. A central column with 24 sides represents the world's main timezones, with the major cities of that zone engraved onto it. The clock has become the scene of protests since the 1970s, as well as a meeting place.
