| Not far from Sint-Nicolaaskapel in Valkhofpark stands the Barbarossa ruins, a remnant of a chapel within Charlemagne's palace rebuilt in 1155 by Holy Roman emperor Frederick Barbarossa. The ruin is an apse made of tuff stone, and was spared in 1796 (together with Sint-Nicolaaskapel) when the rest of the palace ruins were demolished. |
