The eastern core of central Berlin is Alexander Square, after Russian tsar Alexander I, and one of the city's most-visited areas. The Marienkirche stands to the north (left of picture), but it is dominated by the landmark 368m-tall Fernsehturm (Television Tower), built by East Germany in the 1960s as a sign of Communist technological prowess and is seen anywhere in the city.
