| Walking east along Akerkhof, the street linking the Aa canal to the Aa Church (the tower of which is clearly visible ahead) and Vismarkt beyond. The Akerkhof actually used to be a cemetery; burials took place there from the 12th century onwards, but this practice ended when burial in the city centre was no longer considered hygienic, and the Akerkhof was cleared in 1828. |
