St Giles' Cathedral, looking south-east from the Lawnmarket section of the Royal Mile. Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, it is dedicated to Saint Giles, the patron saint of lepers, and has been the city's religious focal point since its construction in the 14th century. In 1633, king Charles I made St Giles' the cathedral of the newly created Diocese of Edinburgh.
