The National Monument of Scotland (left of picture) on Calton Hill, a memorial to the Scottish soldiers and sailors who died in the Napoleonic Wars (1803-15). Modelled upon the Parthenon in Athens, construction started in 1826 but left unfinished in 1829 due to lack of funds. Opposite (right) stands the Nelson Monument, commemorating his victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
