St Andrew Square at the east end of George Street, in Edinburgh's New Town neighbourhood north of Princes Street. laid out in the 1770s and quickly becoming an affluent centre of the city. Marking the centre of the garden square is the fluted column of the Melville monument, dating from 1827 and commemorating Scottish statesman Henry Dundas, the first Viscount Melville.
