| At the eastern end of the Royal Mile stands Holyrood Palace, the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. It began as a a guest house for Holyrood Abbey (its ruins visible far-left of picture), constructed between 1501-5 by Scottish king James IV into a Gothic palace adjacent to it, rebuilt by Charles II in 1674, and renovated into a modern residence by George V in 1922. |
