Looking east across Grassmarket, a historic market place lying under the southern walls of Edinbugh Castle. Dating from 1477, a section was initially given over to the sale of horses and cattle (its name deriving from livestock grazing in pens at its western end). The Covenanters Memorial (left of picture) marks where over 100 Covenanters were publically executed between 1661-88.
