With the permission of king Charles VII of France, William Preston of Gorton had brought from France the arm bone of Saint Giles, an important relic. From the mid-1450s, the Preston Aisle (seen here) was added to the southern side of the choir to commemorate him. Since 1953, the banners of the current Knights of the Thistle, the Scottish order of chivalry, have hung here.
