At the western end of the Royal Mile stands Edinburgh Castle, atop its position on Castle Rock (an old volcanic plug) and the city's most-visited landmark. There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of king Malcolm III (r. 1058-93) until 1633; the castle's residential role then declined, and by the 17th century was principally used as a military garrison.
