| In the south-western inner suburbs of modern Maastricht stands the preserved remains of the Waldeck casemate, a double-wall bastion of the outer city wall. Built in the 1680s, it was named after its patron Waldeck, the city's military governor. When the outer walls were demolished in 1867, a park was created around the surviving bastion to preserve it; it was renovated in 1968. |
