| On top of a tall hill (Sint-Pieterberg, 100m tall) about 2km south of Maastricht's city centre stands the Saint Peter military fortress, built in 1702 as another part of the city's outer fortifications. A fort a short distance away from the city proper was deemed necessary after the French attempted to breach its southern walls in 1673: any southern attack could be repulsed from this fort. |
