| The Helpoort, a former city gate within the inner ring of Maastricht's medieval city walls. It is believed to date from around 1230, making it the oldest existing city gate in the Netherlands, and was first mentioned as Hoogbruggepoort (High Bridge Gate), later called Helpoort (Hell's Gate) in the 18th century. All of Maastricht's remaining city gates were demolished in 1867. |
