| Looking down the central nave of the Basilica of Our Lady. Excavations show a chapel has existed here from the Roman era, possibly replacing a pagan sanctuary; the current building dates from the 11th century, with an untouched Romanesque interior of unplastered pillars and mural arches. The church was elevated to a minor basilica in 1933 by pope Pius XI. |
